Exclusive Interview with Phaniendra Somraj
NY Glam: What projects are you currently working on?
I am a Engineering professional with 2 amazing kids. Our lives are really hectic and busy. But I cannot not pursue my artistic endeavors. I put myself a goal few years ago to do at least one project every year and I have done 4 short films since (one every year). This year is my fifth of that promise and working on my fifth short film called “Ginger”, a short story about a fish called Ginger.
NY Glam: What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better for you?
A film that touches deeper emotions, a story that has a good plot and which inspires to apply in real life is what I look in a film. Film makers are entertainers and if all the qualities and entertainment combines to impress me, I give it a five star and recommend all over my posts. 🙂
NY Glam: As a screenwriter, what is the most important aspect of building a character?
The most important aspect I think is to build weaknesses while building a character. I feel that while the actor conquers each of his/her weaknesses through the story, the audience connect more and more to the character.
NY Glam: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?
I have only done 4 projects so far
My most favorite is the music video project called “Kala” (ART). I wrote the lyrics in Telugu language and composed the tune for the film. It is a story about domestic violence and 2 dancers – A flamenco dancer and an Indian classical dancer who become friends. We released the project in 3 different languages – Telugu, Spanish and Marati, and that journey in itself was difficult but worth exploring.
My second favorite is my first project called “Samskruthi”. I took a small gesture at Indian temples and filmed a good message short film.
NY Glam: Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?
I am a guitarist, song writer and composer. I am also a trained Indian Classical Dancer.
I feel combining music, dance and my life’s experiences and giving it a platform of film making, has given me a new world to express. I am so thankful to my family and friends who support me on this journey.
NY Glam: What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career in filmmaking?
Update your skills in almost all of the 24 crafts to be able to communicate with your team effectively, work on your story telling process as story is the core of any film made ever.
NY Glam: What can we expect from you in 2020?
Currently working on my 5th project. More to come, keep in touch. 🙂
NY Glam: Where can everyone keep up with you to learn more?
