Puy Navarro began her professional career in her native Spain, acting in classical plays. She has performed and studied internationally in Spain, France, Japan, Cuba and the US. She has worked with renowned directors such as Stephen Daldry, Luis García Berlanga and Jorge Alí Triana. She is a member of the Spanish Repertory Theatre in NYC and has played with many NY based theatre companies doing classical, experimental theatre, clown and physical theatre.
Recent independent films and TV credits include, the mini-series “Men Who Build America”, “Stray Dolls” and “He Matado a Mi Marido.” She graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Puy began writing when she felt the need to turn the play she had produced at the United Nations into a film script.
Puy’s script “Life is a dream” was finalist at Sundance Writer’s Lab in 2014, and it was selected by Dreamago’s International Writers Lab in the same year. In 2018, Puy was invited to a pitch session in Los Angeles by Dreamago’s program Meet your Match. In 2016 her play “Else and Henry,” was awarded the Third Prize in the Metlife Foundation’s national writers’ competition Our Voices. She has won a Residency in Switzerland to turn “Else and Henry” into a film script.
She has worked for the Rubin Museum of Art as a Story Teller for their Sleepovers. She has written short stories and has performed for “The Moth” at their community programs. Puy studied the Master in Creative Writing at NYU, Department of Spanish and Portuguese with Antonio Muñoz Molina and screenwriting at NYU TIsch, with Paul Thompson.
Exclusive Interview with Puy Navarro-Filmmaker
NY Glam: What projects are you currently working on?
I am in meetings with different production companies in Madrid, in order to find the right match to produce my script “Life is a Dream,” inspired in the play by Calderón and the “Desaparecidos” in Argentina. I’m also re-writing a script about a middle-age woman who has been victimized by an ambivalent partner. (Ambivalent Love). And I’m also doing some research about the architect Henry Klumb ands his wife Else Klumb, which are the subject of another script that I’ll be writing in a Writers Residency that I won, in Switzerland.
NY Glam: What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better for you?
I come from the theatre tradition, where you have a direct dialogue with the audience. Ands what fascinates me about film, is that it’s a team effort. You write a script and when you shoot you realize it has a life of its own. Filmmaking is about telling a story with images… and when a film is great, every time you watch it, you find a different layer…
NY Glam: As a screenwriter, what is the most important aspect of building a character?
Being truthful to the character. Following his/her impulses, finding the action that best suits his/her desires.
NY Glam: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?
“Stray Dolls” by Sonejuhi Sinha, “You, Me, Bathroom, Sex< Now” by Francisco Lupini and the theatre play “Ay Carmela.”
NY Glam: Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?
My passion is acting. I love reading in general but specially short stories. And I love to practice and to teach Yoga and meditation. I have a class of yoga and writing called “From the Heart, to the Mouth to the Page.”
NY Glam: What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career in filmmaking?
NEVER GIVE UP.
