The name Los Angeles comes from the Spanish language, and it means “The Angels”. The name is an abbreviation from the original name of the place.

The city is known by its initials, L.A., and by its nickname, the City of Angels, derived from the Spanish translation of Los Angeles. The official name of the city, City of Los Angeles, has remained unchanged since 1850.

The Real Name of Los Angeles. In 1781, a group of 44 settlers founded a town named “El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula,” (“The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels on of the River Porciúncula”). We now know it simply as Los Angeles.
