Exclusive Interview with Tian Weiping – Artist & Scriptwriter
Tian Weiping, born in 1956, graduated from the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts in 1983. He once worked as a professor and doctoral advisor in school of Fine Arts of Harbin Normal University, a former director of the Chinese artists association and the director of the Chinese Oil Painting Society. He has held exhibitions of personal works at various art galleries throughout the country and has been well received, which is the greatest achievement of his life. Out of passion for film and writing, in recent years he has been a scriptwriter in some documentary projects. His next goal is to travel around the world, record the beauty with brushes and words, and create more scripts based on interesting and meaningful experiences.
NY Glam: What projects are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on a national art foundation project with paintings and video works involved.
NY Glam: What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better for you?
If a film is not written or produced from the perspective of entertainment, and can give people inspiration and reflection, I’ll think it’s a good film.
A good structure, wonderful narrative style and refined language model contribute to a great film.
NY Glam: As a screenwriter, what is the most important aspect of building a character?
As a screenwriter, I think the most important thing in building a character is to display the mental state, the growing background and the personality traits of the character so that it will be very vivid and moving.
NY Glam: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?
My favorite projects are

NY Glam: Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?
You know basically I am an artist, a painter more exactly. What is required most for a painter is creation. I produced many good works with creative expressions. Sometimes the creative ideas I got in painting can give me more inspiration which helps to generate more scripts. It’s interactive.
NY Glam: What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career in filmmaking?
First, to make a good work, team spirit is essential; Second, to be committed to the thing you have interest in; also, learn to have a sense of responsibility.
