Exclusive interview with Waseem Ahmed – Screenwriter

Mr. Waseem Ahmed is a 54 years old screenwriter from Pakistan. He got inspired by movies like Shaw shank redemption and Seven years in Tibet, which left a big impression on him and changed his opinion about movie making business once for all. He now believes very firmly that some truly inspiring movies can change your life forever. This inspiration took him into the field of screenplay writing and after struggling for a good ten years he came up with a truly remarkable screenplay by the title “Where the rainbow meets the earth”, which elevated him to the rank of a finalist in the ISC 2023 event. According to him this very challenging field of screenwriting becomes even more difficult if English language is not your mother tongue because all entries have to be submitted in English language only. But since good screenwriting competitions like ISC gets submissions from all over the world therefore this disadvantage gets minimized to a good extent, but still a firm grip on English language is a must to become effective in the art of screenwriting as you have to create pictures with words. Mr. Waseem believes that now a days, it is not an easy task to make a movie so interesting that it can compel people to part with their cell phones for a couple of long hours. And if a movie can still do that, it would only mean a great screenplay besides other qualities. And finally a movie that can leave upon the audience a lasting impression, like a message of “Hope” given in the letter written by Andy Duffresne in the all time favorite thriller movie “Shaw shank Redemption”. This very message got very successfully etched in the minds of the audience and inspired people to stay hopeful even during the most difficult and hopeless circumstances that this life can offer. Motto of Mr. Waseem Ahmed towards effective screenwriting is to change the lives of people with your keyboard with strong positive messages along-with entertainment.

NY Glam:   What projects are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a comedy feature script which revolves around a spoiled rich girl who is obsessed with taking on tough survival challenges and behaves better than most men when it comes to surviving in harsh survival conditions.

NY Glam:   What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better for you?

Firstly a good movie should have the full ability to take its audience inside the movie and feels the same emotions as what the actors are going through inside the movie. Secondly, if the audience wants to see the movie not once but many times and feel more entertained each time, then it is definitely a memorable movie like “Gone with the Wind”.  Thirdly a good movie compels its audience to stay glued to the screens of the cinema or TV, while sitting on the edge of their seats, for a period of good two hours totally oblivious of the rest of the world.

NY Glam:   As a screenwriter, what is the most important aspect of building a character?

As a screenwriter I would say that in order to build your main character you have to step into the shoes of that character yourself. Your main character doesn’t have to be smart or very intelligent but it should be built in such a way that her/his action becomes justifiable in almost every circumstances and audience can easily understand his/her situations and empathize with him/her.

NY Glam:   Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?

This was my first creative project of life, writing a feature screenplay “Where the rainbow meets the earth”.  This project took me around ten years to fully conceive the concept and the screenplay was written and re-written several times before submitting the final copy to different international screenplay festivals.

NY Glam:   Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?

Yes, I write short romantic stories purely as a hobby and share them on authorsden.com

NY Glam:   What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a

Career in film making?

My advice to the upcoming film makers is to realize the importance of a great screenplay as a great script normally makes a great movie. So in order to become a good film maker you should know better where to look for unique screenplays and become good at effective and speedy reading so that you can read several screenplays in a short duration of time.  All film makers should make a team of capable people to track down the best and the most entertaining screenplays from around the world and know exactly how to do it.

NY Glam:   What can we expect from you in this actual year?

I am in the process of writing a comedy screenplay this year and plan to enter it into a number of screenplay competitions, so you guys can wish me good luck this year.
