Exclusive Interview with Drew Anderson – Screenwriter
NY Glam: What projects are you currently working on?
I am brainstorming new story ideas of different genres mostly for literature.
NY Glam: What makes a film great for you? Are there certain qualities that make a film better for you?
What makes a great film is the story itself and the characters involved in it. When learning of scriptwriting in college, I have recognized the formulas and structures of scriptwriting in different genres. If there is a movie that has an interesting concept, I will go and see it. I like a story that is new, that doesn’t follow the typical beginning, middle, and conclusion. For example, in a general Biopic movie of an entertainer, the plot follows the difficulties to rise to stardom for the main character, then the celebrity makes decisions that would later hurt them in the future and at the climax of the movie the celebrity has fallen from grace. At the ending the person finds redemption and gives a happy ending. The second quality I mentioned is characters. I think well written characters should make the audience feel for them whether it is laughter, sadness, or giving moral support throughout the movie.
NY Glam: As a screenwriter, what is the most important aspect of building a character?
When building a character, I don’t just write the character on paper I like to see that character through their eyes. By thinking of what you want a character to say, what actions to take, how their personalities are shown in different scenes. If a writer becomes the character while writing the story, they have created someone real rather than fictional.
NY Glam: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?
I have made my own amateur independent short projects in the past: 1) Toy Shorty- a stop-motion animation which I submitted to a film festival in Auburn NY in the early 2010’s. 2) Maestro Fantasmic and 3) Step into Rhythm- a documentary. All are on YouTube.
NY Glam: Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?
Making costumes for holiday events, Photoshop, photography, and video recording.
NY Glam: What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career in filmmaking?
Have small goals that are achievable, search every venue to help you gain the opportunity of your creative passion, and rely on yourself to rise and succeed in filmmaking.
NY Glam: What can we expect from you in this actual year?
I have submitted a second script to a different writing competition that is associated with the International Screenwriters association in May. I will continue to write other independent projects for publishing.
