What is your recent feature document \u201cThe Fourth Kingdom,\nThe Kingdom of Plastics\u201d about? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> My most\nrecent feature documentary is titled \u201cThe Fourth Kingdom, The Kingdom of\nPlastics\u201d and it\u2019s about a recycling center in Brooklyn where people can\nexchange plastic bottles and cans for 5 cents. In the movie we portray a\ncommunity that some consider marginal, in a poetic way, trying to show their\nhumanity and their redemption. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Who did you collaborate with in this project? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> We were recording there for several months before and at the end we focus on the people that gave us more access. I\u2019d say that our main protagonist is Ren\u00e9, a Mexican guy who has been more than 15 years in New York without seeing his family, but luckily, other people like the founder of the center, Ana Martinez de Luco, Eugene Gadsden, Pierre Simmons, Walter or Juan, joined us during our long days of shooting, giving us the opportunity to show that sense of a family that we think the place has. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What do you hope people will take away from the documentary\nfilm?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> I hope\npeople would see the humanity and the poetry behind each person. Most of the\npeople we portray could be considered outcasted, but everybody has a story to\ntell. Beyond the prejudices, if one takes the time to get to know them, one\nmight feel that behind the appearances there are poets, philosophers, inventors\nand even artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n When is the next screening and tell us about any\ncompetitions\/festival submission? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> The\nmovie was screened at DOC NYC last year and had a very good festival run. We\nare negotiation with a VOD platform and we hope that we can have it online\nsoon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Tell us a bit about the other films you\u2019ve made.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> I\u2019ve made another feature documentary titled \u201cThy Father\u2019s Chair\u201d, which premiered at IDFA and was a Critic\u2019s pick for The New York Times when it opened theatrically in the US in 2017. I\u2019ve also made several short films, two of them premiered in Sundance, titled Godka Cirka (2014) and Odysseus\u2019 Gambit (2012). Both of them are online in Vimeo. Besides that, I edited a lot of movies and I also like to write some narrative features. The last one is titled We Are Living Things and it\u2019s based on my short film Only Solomon Lee. It\u2019s still in post-production and I hope it will be in festivals during 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What makes beautiful art in your opinion?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> It\ndepends, but I usually find it beautiful when I can find honesty and also when\nit connects with me in a way that it can make me feel something new, or at\nleast things that I might have already felt in the past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Which other documentaries\/films that\nyou\u2019ve seen have made an impact on you, personally?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> I studied at City College of New York where Chantal Akerman was one of my professors and my thesis mentor. She definitely made an impact on me and of course her films. \u201cLetters from home\u201d became one of the most important films for me during the last decade for many personal reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How has your style evolved?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> It depends on the project, but I like\nv\u00e9rit\u00e9 and enjoy making things that are cinematic. I find the border between\nfiction and reality very interesting. I\u2019m also trying to match my style with\nwho I am. I have a disability and only one arm so lately I\u2019ve been trying to\nwork not moving the camera that much, just with the camera on sticks, without\nmoving it, looking for symmetric compositions and observing the reality that\nhappens in front of it\u2026 that how The Fourth Kingdom was made. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What skills\/personal attributes are most important to\nbeing successful?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> Success is\nsomething very relative and perfection is just a delusion for\nself-satisfaction, a path that can led you to total stasis. I\u2019ve seen very\ntalented people with really good intentions that don\u2019t push any of their\ninitiatives because they are afraid to fail. Realization is not what we see in\nsocial media, it\u2019s what we find in our journey. So, I always remember this\nmotto: \u201cfail, fail more, fail best\u201d because it keeps you trying and away from\nquitting. In that sense, I\u2019d say that perseverance and passion are important\nattributes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What other hobbies do you have? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> Discovering\nnew places with my 3 kids and y wife is my favorite thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What are you thinking about doing\nnext?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> I\u2019m\npreparing a narrative film to be shot in Spain next May 2021. It\u2019s titled\nUnicorns and it\u2019s about a girl that maybe because she wants it all might end up\nwith anything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Where does your studio want to go from here? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alex Lora:<\/strong> My\nstudio \u201cHandfulfilms\u201d wants to keep growing. We film but we do a lot of editing\ntoo\u2026 narrative, features, sound design is also we focus on too. We have started\nproducing documentaries and short films too, not just mine, for other\nfilmmakers.
