Joan Bentosela<\/strong> GONE director. <\/em>Based in France. He wrote and directed three short films: Davvero<\/em> (2004), Wet<\/em> (2007), starring the French actress Laure Calamy, and Gone<\/em> (2019). He also wrote three short radio plays for the French radio France Culture. \u00a0In 2005 he studied screenplay writing at La F\u00e9mis, the French National Cinema School in Paris, during a one year workshop. He makes films only because it\u2019s better than life. For him making films doesn\u2019t make you happier but it brings some colors to your life. And making films is creating a different world because this one is not right. \u00a0All the main characters of his films are female ones. It\u2019s not a choice, it\u2019s an evidence. In addition, he loves mystery and all his short films are full of mystery!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exclusive Interview with Joan Bentosela<\/strong> – Filmmaker\n\n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> How long have you been\nmaking films and videos?<\/strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u00b4ve been making short films and screenplays for 16 years.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What film was your directorial debut? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davvero<\/em>, a rather missed short film. In\nFrance, we say that the first cr\u00eape is always missed! It is the same for the\nfilms!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What is your recent film about? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gone<\/em> is a psychological feminist\nthriller about maternity, loss of reality and alternate universe. A bickering family\non a road trip stops at the gas station. Murielle, the mother, insists on\nhaving the car washed. And suddenly her reality disappears. What is her\nreality? Where is the truth? The audience has to decide!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> How did you go about casting for the film?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw Aur\u00e9lie Pitrat, the lead\nactress of Gone<\/em>, in a theatre play in Ajaccio, Corsica, where I was\nliving. I immediately knew that she was my Murielle<\/em>! Everyone appreciates\nher extraordinary performance in the film. She brings a lot of humanity and\nsincerity to this role. I am very proud to have her in my film. I also saw the\ntwo other actors of the film in plays. Theatre actors inspire me more than\nothers. Perhaps because I feel more directly their strength when they are\nplaying on stage. There is a rare emotion. I started to write screenplays when\nI started seeing actors on stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What was the most important lesson you had to learn that has had a\npositive effect on your film? How did that lesson happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That the reality of a shooting\nis always better than the imagination of a screenplay! Moreover the shooting\nwas a delight, this is the first time that it happens to me. This atmosphere\ngives you a big and strong liberty and confidence to do what you want to do. It\u2019s\nmagical! If only it could be the same every time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> Tell<\/strong> us a bit about\nthe other films you\u2019ve made and your other projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davvero<\/em> is an Italian comedy about\nlanguage and incommunicability in relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wet<\/em> is starring the amazing French\nactress, Laure Calamy at her film debut. It is a fantasy short movie about the loss\nof reality and incommunicability in relationship. My two obsessions! The cinema\nonly reflects what I am. I always talk about myself in my short films but not\nabout my intimate life which would not be very interesting for the audience! I\ntalk about my obsessions and fears. And I want to question the viewer about who\nhe is for himself and for others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I have three short film\nprojects: a drama to be shot in Corsica, a fantasy one to be shot in Spain, and\nanother to be shot anywhere! Always searching money for making them. And I\u2019m\nwriting a feature one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What role have film festivals played in your life so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The screenplay\nof my second short film, Wet<\/em>, was awarded in a festival in France, I had\na grant and then I could make the film.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My third one, Gone<\/em>,\nis now played in festivals all around the world. It is very exciting and\nrewarding. It gives me visibility that I didn\u2019t have before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> Is it harder to get started or to keep going? What was\nthe particular thing that you had to conquer to do either?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is harder to\nget started. Really. At your debut, you are like a little lamb surrounded with\nsharks! And then, with the years, you become less a lamb and more a shark! I\nhave long considered that making films was something impossible. But ultimately\nno! It\u2019s proof!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> How has your style evolved?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I choose more purity and\nsimplicity. I look more for the core in a scene or a dialogue, and prioritise\nan uncluttered style. But I\u2019m always learning. And considering the topics of my\nshort films: darker and darker! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What has been your personal key to success? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never give up and show perseverance.\nAnd always thinking about the child you were. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We make films because life is\nnot enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What are you thinking\nabout doing next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
