I\nwent to Tel Aviv University where I studied film in 2006. I\u2019ve been making\nfilms ever since. So\u2026 14 years of being behind the camera. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What film was your directorial debut? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A short film called Broken\nWhite<\/em>. It\u2019s about a painter struggling with an art blockage. She goes to\nsnowy Central Park with her white canvas and discovers that her best friend\u2019s\nlove is what she\u2019d been searching for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What is your recent film about? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Music Video Eshet Chayil\nof Hip Hop <\/em>tries to break through the limitations in the closed off Hasidic\nworld and criticizes the objectification of women in Hasidism and Hip Hop by asking\n questions like: How fun can it be to be\nreligious in a \u201chip hop\u201d kind of way (in a freer kind of way). Why can\u2019t women\nbe equal to men in the Orthodox Jewish world, why can\u2019t they be educated, pray\ntogether and even wear a Shtreimel<\/em>? (The fur hat Lea wears in almost\nevery shot). Why can\u2019t they be sexy? Why must they be modest to be\naccepted by the religious society?<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What was the most important lesson you had to learn that has had a\npositive effect on your film? How did that lesson happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We started shooting the music\nvideo before the song was fully recorded and produced. After we had shot in both\nJerusalem and at Times Square, Lea and the music producer decided to change <\/strong>the style of the song from hip\nhop to a more <\/strong>oriental feel, which entailed using different instruments\n(a clarinet) and less of a hip hop beat. That was really challenging in editing\nbecause the Times Square scene no longer fully matched the music. There was also\na new part added to the song we hadn\u2019t shot yet at all. That made us go back to\nshooting and adding the \u201cnight scene\u201d (in pink lights) on a rooftop in\nBrooklyn. In the end, this created a more diverse and interesting visual\npalette for the music video. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n NY\nGlam:<\/strong> Tell<\/strong> us a bit about\nthe other films you\u2019ve made and your other projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Waltzing\nin LA LA Land<\/em>\nis a short dance film about a ballet dancer that spends most of her time\ndancing alone in the studio but dreams of dancing with a beautiful partner in\nthe middle of an empty Times Square (I used this location for 2 films\nalready:)). I didn\u2019t have a script for this short. I just wanted to shoot the\ndancing part in slow motion in that urban emptiness. (Shot by the amazing\nJonathan Hauerstock, who is my favorite director of photography and also shot\nmost of Eshet Chayil<\/em>) The rest of the film was\ncrystallized in my\nhead after we filmed the Times Square part. I will talk later about my upcoming\nshort Meat Shop<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY\nGlam:<\/strong> What role have film festivals played in your life so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I have attended many film festivals\nbefore (Tribeca etc.) and have always wanted to be accepted with my own film,\nso being accepted to the IFFNY with Eshet Chayil of Hip Hop<\/em> is very\nexciting. But<\/a>[L1]<\/a> it is not the only one I\u2019m part\nof this year, Eshet Chayil <\/em>has also been accepted to Minneapolis St.\nPaul International Film Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY\nGlam:<\/strong> Is it harder to get started or to keep going? What was\nthe particular thing that you had to conquer to do either?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For me it\u2019s harder to get started when you don\u2019t know the market well enough or what you\u2019re capable of. Once you get started the ball of energy keeps rolling and as scary as it is, it feels easier to me. You have already decided you\u2019re taking this ride and now you\u2019re asking for the world to join your enthusiasm and karma and somehow magic starts to happen. For me a good partner is what helps me conquer both the \u201cget started\u201d and \u201ckeep going\u201d. Having someone to share my ideas with, who is as enthusiastic for the project as I am, and who can show me a different point of view. Lea Kalisch is a great partner for that. She has sharp instincts and great ideas, she is talented, she knows what she wants, and she also listens very well. We also think alike in terms of story, which I am grateful for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY\nGlam:<\/strong> How has your style evolved?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I keep growing\nand evolving with every project I do. With Eshet Chayil<\/em> it was very\nimportant to me to use authentic locations and camera movements that kept us in\nreal time with Lea. The music video talks about the connection between Hasidism\nand Hip Hop, so shooting in Jerusalem and New York shows that contrast. My next\ndirecting project is a short called Meat Shop<\/em>. It\u2019s a stylized thriller about a pregnant Israeli woman who gets stuck with her\ncar in a Palestinian village. There she asks for the help of Muhammad, a meat\nshop owner, who needs to decide if he will hide her and risk himself and his\nfamily. The short is in pre-production right now. I wrote it with my\npartner Eyal Berger and it will be shot in Israel. Our style in directing this\nfilm is very different from Eshet Chayil<\/em>. Every camera movement is very\nspecific because it\u2019s a stylized thriller and we\u2019re messing with the viewer\u2019s\nmind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> What has been your personal key to success?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/strong>Just keep doing the work. Keep writing. Keep talking about what I write, keep being enthusiastic about it.
