Professor Qin Xiujie, graduated from Fine Arts Department of Northeast Normal University in 1987, graduated from the 8th<\/sup> Seminar of Oil Painting Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts in1996; once taught at Fine Arts Faculty of Northeast Normal University, currently teaching at Fine Arts Faculty of MinZu University of China. He thinks art is important for us because it can help us avoid being destroyed by truth. Only in art can we meet ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:How did you get started in\nyour career? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I started my career in\nthe 1990s after watching a lot of movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:What is your experience\nshooting with different tools? What are you to go to gadgets? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At the beginning of shooting, I just used ordinary home DVDs. With the\nadvancement of technology, there are a lot of options. I generally like to\nchoose a portable equipment with better quality. Sometimes I choose large\nmachines like ARRI, BMG, etc. according to the needs of the project. I may try\nfs7 and a7s2 next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> Which specific\nrequirements did you have to take care of when choosing your equipment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n First I need to consider the type of machine, model and the specific requirements\nfor\nthe project taken, and then the focal length and quality of the lens. \nAlso, the equipment should be able to facilitate post-production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> What are you\ncurrently working on? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Apart from art teaching, I\u2019m working\non experimental films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> Did you like\nthe script?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes, I love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> Did you have a\nparticular shooting approach when making this film? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n No, I didn\u2019t use any particular shooting\napproaches. But I need to follow the shooting, to know where to sneak, where to\ninsinuate the camera, when to freeze the action and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> Was there a\nscene in the film that was particularly challenging from conception to actual\nexecution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At the beginning of the film, it\u2019s a challenge to make the long\nshot of the flock of sheep. The scene is changing greatly, and the flock is scattered,\nso it is difficult to control the composition of the picture and the moving line. Fortunately,\nthe final effect is not bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> What was the\natmosphere like on the set?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a little heavy and melancholy. I particularly like the scene at the\nclosing part of the film. There is a pair of crutches in the river. This scene is metaphorical and plays a\ngood role in emotional rendering for the entire film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> How do you define the role of cinematographer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A cinematographer is the second\ndirector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> What have been some of your recent\/other projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Our next project is to make an\nexperimental film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> How do you choose your movies that you want to shoot?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Mainly depends on script. Besides, shooting\nconditions, technical difficulties also need to be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> What are your preferred shooting locations?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I like to make movies in some primitive and undeveloped places, or\nindustrial ruins.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> Is there a film or film maker that inspired you to pick\nup a camera?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sokurov\u2019s Russia<\/em>n Ark<\/em>\ntouched me a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> Describe your biggest accomplishment to date?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My biggest achievement was last year’s documentary 8341<\/em>,\nwhich was\nan art project film about how a group of artists made a scheme for the statue on the fourth plinth\nin Trafalgar Square in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> Do you ever think about directing someday?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes I direct\nsome works actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam:<\/strong> What are some of the projects that you are working next?\nWho are you working with?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Next I’m going to finish our\nexperimental film and track and record some social events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I work with an art group. It is\ncomposed of university professors and professional artists.
