{"id":8240,"date":"2020-01-22T08:00:14","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T08:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nyglamour.net\/?p=8240"},"modified":"2026-02-03T04:08:37","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T04:08:37","slug":"my-intentions-are-to-produce-the-projects-that-i-desire-to-see-created-matthew-carauddo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nyglamour.net\/?p=8240","title":{"rendered":"\u201cMy intentions are to produce the projects that I desire to see created. \u201d-  Matthew Carauddo"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An actor and performer for over 30 years, and a licensed fencing instructor for 15, Matthew is the creator and owner of SaberCombat.com&#8211;a performance-based business focused on live fight work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known as &#8220;Novastar&#8221; in the Star Wars\/lightsaber community, Matthew Carauddo has over 15 years of experience in fencing, staged combat and martial arts (Wing Chun Kung Fu, Jujitsu, Shotokan Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Tricking). Matthew is a licensed fencing instructor, approved and examined by the Francais Federation D\u2019Escrime (FFE). He has taught hundreds of group fencing classes and one-on-one lessons behind the mask throughout the California bay area at schools, academies of fencing, summer camps, and parks &amp; recreational facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DIAMOND DRAGONS:  Matthew stepped away from most all of these facets of his life&#8211;for the past 2.5 years&#8211;in order to develop &#8220;Diamond Dragons&#8221;\u2026 the original &#8220;hero&#8217;s journey&#8221; masterpiece and amazing fantasy world which he has been filled with zeal and discipline to deliver to audiences young and old!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew achieved his FFE (Federation Francaise d\u2019Escrime) diploma in France after testing in front of several French fencing masters, and after years of training, assisting with instruction, and years of competitive saber fencing.  Studying originally under Maestro Daniel Tibbetts of California Fencing Academy, Matthew continued forward from there, learning from additional instructors and masters over the past 12 years, including: Maestro Marcos Lucchetti, Prevost Miklos Benedek, Maestro Rob Handelman, Maestro Tomek Amborski, Maestro Anthony Joslin, and several others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to this, Matthew had to say: \u201cFencing also helped me rehabilitate my ankles after some accidents I\u2019d had, including falling off a cliff, which badly damaged my right ankle\u2026 and later, another accident that wrecked my left ankle.  I really had some trouble running, bending my ankles too far, and lifting heavy things, but after some PAINFUL dedication to fencing footwork, hard work in general, and tons of training\u2026 my ankles improved DRAMATICALLY.  All the hard work paid off, and I basically came out stronger after my accidents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew\u2019s staged combat experience ranges from choreographing classic plays such as \u201cTwelfth Night\u201d and \u201cRomeo &amp; Juliet\u201d, to children\u2019s performances of \u201cPeter Pan\u201d, \u201cThe Three Musketeers\u201d, and quite naturally\u2026 L.E.D. light saber combat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2006, Novastar launched \u201cBalance of Power\u201d, a series of 100% live staged combat shows, complete with music, vocals, story, character, and of course\u2013saber combat. Visit \u201cgreytale\u201d on Youtube to see more of Novastar\u2019s \u201cBalance of Power\u201d performances, along with many other videos regarding sabers and martial arts: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/greytale\">ttp:\/\/www.youtube.com\/greytale<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Novastar is also considered one of the primary pioneers of the \u201csound font\u201d (2006\/2007), which is basically a collection of \u201cswing\u201d and \u201cclash\u201d motion effects meant for custom sound\/light driver boards for LED saber props. Are there certain\nqualities that make a film better for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, the #1\npriority is having a compelling, powerful, viscerally emotional story.&nbsp; Most everyone will note this.&nbsp; However, *every* aspect of a film is\nimportant\u2014just like with a theatrical production: lighting\u2026 sound\u2026 music\u2026\nprops\u2026 costuming\u2026 color palette(s)\u2026 tone\u2026 pacing\u2026 actors\/performances\u2026 EDITING,\nand more!&nbsp; If any of these are extremely\nsub-par and painfully so\u2014they can make or break the power of the story being\ntold.&nbsp; My recommendation is: do\neverything as specifically and robustly as is possible.&nbsp; Certainly budget, logistics, time\/deadlines\nand more can be prohibitive to some aspects of most any production\u2026 but\u2014for\nexample\u2014if your story is amazing, but the MUSIC is absolutely awful\u2026 you\u2019ll\ndrastically undercut the power of your work.&nbsp;\nSame goes for *any* aspect.&nbsp; Bad\nsound = bad film.&nbsp; Bad acting = bad film,\netc.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NY Glam: <\/strong><strong>As a\nscreenwriter, what is the most important aspect of building a character? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me, it\u2019s without question that two\nthings *must* be present.&nbsp; One of them\nwould be some type of flaw or hardship that constantly harangues them from\ngrowing.&nbsp; The second would be\u2026 eventually\nOVERCOMING that flaw or hardship\u2026 or\u2026 using it to their advantage in either an\nunexpected or relatively-expected manner.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NY Glam: Top 3 favorite projects that you have been involved in?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a tough one for me to decide,\nas\u2026 I\u2019ve done a lot of my own.&nbsp; In no\nparticular order\u2014portraying \u201cBilbo Baggins\u201d in a stage version of \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d\u2026\nportraying \u201cDarth Vader\u201d on dozens of varying occasions (in full costume +\nlights &amp; sound that I wired up and designed\/masterminded)\u2026 and voicing the\ncharacter of J.C. Denton from \u201cDeus Ex\u201d in a short Machinima animation\u2014J.C.\nDenton is one of my favorite all-time video game characters, and I loved Jay\nAnthony Franke\u2019s original vocals on the initial game (from ~1999\/2000).<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NY Glam: Do you express&nbsp;yourself&nbsp;creatively in any other ways?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very much.&nbsp; \u201cDiamond Dragons\u201d is the latest one of my\ncreations, and not much will stop me from pursuing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suppose *if* my\nadvice was truly desired, I\u2019d simply HEAVILY reinforce: DISCIPLINE\u2026 and\nCONSISTENCY.&nbsp; In all regards\u2014no matter\nthe subject\/vocation\/hobby\/career.&nbsp; You\nmust do your craft, and do it often.&nbsp; No matter how hard it gets.&nbsp; Otherwise, pursue other ventures?<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NY\nGlam: What can we\nexpect from you in 2020?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDiamond Dragons\u201d keeps\ngaining both ground, followers, team members, and more content.&nbsp;
