Exclusive interview with Anthony Osarfo -Screenwriter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Anthony Osarfo is a Ghanaian by birth. He\u2019s the last born of three children of his parents. In 2018, a very argumentative Osarfo married one beautiful and intelligent but \u2018stubborn\u2019 lady, Janet Braun (based in US). Popularly known in Ghana\u2019s showbiz and media circles as an entertainment journalist and critic, Osarfo can boast of over a decade career in art, culture, tourism, and entertainment writing \u2013 written for three prominent entertainment newspapers, a magazine, and several online portals. Professionally, he\u2019s been writing screenplays since 2009 and has a knack for horror, thriller, and historical fiction writing. He writes mostly features. His consistency fueled with determination on the craft (screenwriting) has so far won him a few tractions. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY Glam: What projects are you\ncurrently working on?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, I\u2019m currently working on a\ncrime-thriller and a historical fiction on African\/black slavery. I have two other\ncompleted screenplays of which one, a supernatural-horror, is winning and\nplacing in finals of contests, but as we say in scripting \u2018writing is\nrewriting\u2019 so I still consider them work in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY Glam: What makes a film great for you? Are there certain\nqualities that make a film better for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premise\/concept. The moment I start watching a movie, I want\nto know what the movie is about. The first ten scenes should give me an idea\nbehind the story. The beginning of the movie should hook me with the\npremise\/idea of the story, if not, I\u2019m out. You lost a viewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the movie is about slavery, let me see a slave or some\nslaves serving a master or being flogged. If it\u2019s about hard drugs and their\ntrafficking, let me see a drug baron, cocaine, a character snuffing – just\nsomething that can help me follow the plot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genre-wise, same. If it\u2019s horror, something must scare me. I\nshould see gore. If it\u2019s comedy, crack me up from the get go. Then, character(s)\n\u2013 good or bad, and plotting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So three things, premise\/idea, character(s), and plot. Camera\nangles, sound, editing, and the rest come secondary to me. Whether the movie is\neducative or not is also secondary to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY Glam: <\/strong>As a\nscreenwriter, what is the most important aspect of building a character? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing my character inside out. It\nhelps me in crafting everything about the story\/screenplay. Knowing the\ncharacter determines how he\/she reacts with other characters; his or her motivations,\ndesires, goals, needs\/wants, weaknesses, strengths, philosophies, and finally,\nhow the character drives the plot to the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you don\u2019t know your character\nwell, you\u2019re only writing a story with a familiar stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY Glam:<\/strong> Top 3 favorite projects that\nyou have been involved in?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in movies or series I\u2019ve written for? For now, none. I\u2019m however about to seal a deal with a team. I will be scripting for a web-series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY Glam<\/strong>: Do you express yourself creatively in any other ways?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tough one there. I try my hands on poems. I write them when the vibe comes. I can be a good singer, but only when I\u2019m alone in my bathroom. Lol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY Glam: What advice would you give to someone who wants to\nhave a career in filmmaking?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be mindful of the rules and break them. Contradictory? Not\nreally. I mean have the mind-set of telling a story with a wow-factor. Don\u2019t\nfollow trends, set them. Provoke minds beyond the ordinary. There\u2019s actually\nnothing new under the sun, but the point is, an old or hackneyed idea or story,\ncan be made new and fresh in the minds of the reader\/cinephile based on the unique\nexpression of it. Script formatting Guru, Dave Trottier, gives this same advice\nto scriptwriters in another profound form: \u201cMost\noften, creativity is not to create something out of nothing. It is a twist on\nan old idea. Creativity also means combining two\nstale ideas to bring forth something fresh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NY Glam: What can we expect from you\nin 2020?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two things. Just two things \u2013 win more\ncontests with my script and get two screenplays I\u2019ve started completed. I\nshould be done with them by the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
