Thank you very much! It\nwas a really milestone concert for me! I worked a lot to make this concert\nhappen in my career. I felt a little nervous before entering the stage but with\nthe first steps towards the conductor\u2019s podium I became calm, with a clear\nmind, and heart full of energy and inspiration. I had no doubt that everything\nis going to be great! I couldn\u2019t imagine any other outcome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
NY Glam: Tell us a little about yourself, growing\nup and your passions. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I was born into a musical family. Everybody except my father (he is a professional\narchitect) were musicians. So in some way I had all prerequisites to become a\nprofessional musician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I can say honestly: practicing violin at the age of 4-5 is quite hard, especially\nwhen other kids play for example hide-and-seek in the yard. But I must admit\nthat the result is much greater than the expectations! Since childhood I was\nfond of symphonic music masterpieces. The music of Mozart, Beethoven,\nTchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff was often the main station on the radio in our cozy flat. So apparently I\nwas fed with classical music. Now I cannot imagine my life without it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: What music project are you currently\nworking on? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Not long ago I returned from a tour of Japan with Paavo J\u00e4rvi and the Estonian\nFestival Orchestra. I was there as assistant conductor and also as violinist. I\nconducted concerts at the St.Petersburg\nphilharmonic hall, then right after I had went on a European tour with Yuri\nTemirkanov and the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In July I participated\nin the P\u00e4rnu music festival in Estonia, and also the J\u00e4rvi Academy conducting course.\nLater I will participate in the 7th Lovro von Matacic international conducting\ncompetition in Zagreb, Croatia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: What do you like more \u2013 playing violin\nwithin an orchestra or conducting an orchestra?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Right now I\u2019m in a very interesting period in my life. I play in top level\norchestras, assisting great masters and I\u2019ve got more and more concerts as a\nconductor. Most importantly, by combining all this I learn so much! I feel that\nI become stronger and wiser from day to day. It\u2019s amazing! So I like everything\nthat connects me with music and I\u2019m glad that for now, I have the time to\ncombine all this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: Do you plan to combine a career of a\nviolinist and career of a conductor in the future? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My passion and goal is conducting in the very best way possible. So\neverything that I do is a step towards my goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: On April 16th<\/sup>,\n2019, you have brilliantly conducted Charles Ives\u2019 \u201cHoliday Symphony\u201d along with maestro Alexander Titov. How was\nit working in parallel with Mr. Titov and conducting an orchestra together? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I must say that Maestro Titov is very well known in St. Petersburg and in\nRussia firstly because of the fact that during Soviet times he was the only one\nwho propagandized the music of Charles Ives. He made a series of concerts\ndedicated to Ives in the 1980s. Almost every masterpiece of Charles Ives was\nperformed for the first time in Leningrad under his baton. It is very a great\nhonor to assist and perform Charles Ives with him! <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: Which musicians have you learned from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I graduated from the St.\nPetersburg Conservatory twice. In 2006-2011, I studied violin with the great\nviolin Professor Antonina Kazarina. In 2011-2016, I studied orchestra-symphonic conducting with Professor\nMikhail Kukushkin whom I consider one of the most accurate adherents of the famous\nIlya Musin technique of orchestral conducting. I play and work with many of the\ngreat conductors and soloists of our time and I learn a lot from each of them.\nI think that this is the best way to learn how to be a very good musician and\nconductor. But over the last several years, I have received the biggest\ninfluence and knowledge from Yuri Temirkanov, Neeme and Paavo J\u00e4rvi. These are\nmy mentors today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: When and where has been a memorable performance for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n My first performance as\nconductor during my first ever serious musical event. In 2012, as a second year\nstudent, I conducted the New Japan Philharmonic orchestra in Tokyo during my\nfirst attempt of participation in an international conducting competition.\nUnforgettable experience! <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: Is there a particular instrumental composition you have arranged that\nnever fails to move you emotionally?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Indeed, when I have\nsome spare time I arrange music which I love, for violin and different types of\nscores. Now I\u2019m working on Michel Legrand\u2019s \u00abJe ne pourrai jamais vivre sans\ntoi\u00bb or \u00abI Will Wait for You\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: Describe your biggest accomplishment to\ndate?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I became a father!<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: Who is your favorite violinist, conductor\nand composer? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I find it quite tricky to answer this frequently asked question,\nespecially about composers. Because there are so many great individualities and\nmusicians around the globe! All of them are so different and I like many many\nof them. You know It\u2019s like talking about painting sculpture, writing\u2026Nikolai\nRoerich, Andrew Wyeth, Auguste Rodin, Leo Tolstoy, Aldous Huxley and an endless\nlist of great names. I can\u2019t say that somebody is a favorite and somebody is\nnot. I think time answers this question better than every human being. That\u2019s\nwhy for applicable performers I prefer to use the word \u00abConvincing\u00bb instead of\n\u00abFavorite\u00bb, but still, it does not fit for composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Violinist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most convincible for me from the category of \u00abLegends\u00bb are David Oistrakh\nand Yehudi Menuhin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As for those whom I\u2019ve heard live, I think it\u2019s Midori Goto. We spent a\nweek full of rehearsals and concerts during the tour with Paavo J\u00e4rvi which I\nmentioned earlier. She performed Violin Concerto No. 1 by Sergey Prokofiev and\nJean Sibelius\u2019 violin concerto. I was charmed and amazed by her\ninterpretations, energy and the \u00abcreative moment\u00bb which appears during concert\nperformances. I consider her one of the most convincing violinists and\nmusicians of our time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Conductor: <\/p>\n\n\n\n The one, who can within the first minutes of being on the conductor\u2019s\npodium convince the musicians around him to follow his vision, passion for\nmusic and his search for harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Composer: <\/p>\n\n\n\n The one whose masterpiece I am conducting now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: Which concert or symphony\ndo you dream to conduct?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I have got my second concert season running, so for now as you can imagine\nmy \u00abDream to conduct\u00bb list will not fit in here! But for this moment I\u2019m mostly\nlooking forward to conducting Leonard Bernstein\u2019s Serenade for Violin, Strings,\nHarp and Percussion. I will work with an amazing violinist from the\nNetherlands, Frederieke Saeijs, in October during the opening concert of the\n10th international Silver Lyre music festival at the St.Petersburg Philharmonia.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: What’s your goal for this year?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course I have them and I have them a lot! These annually goals are\nsmall puzzle pieces of my big vision. But as Henry Ford said: \u00abYou can\u2019t build\na reputation on what you\u2019re going to do.\u00bb So next time I will answer your\nquestion but from the angle of achievements of the past year! <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: Do you have a role model\nin classical music? If yes, who is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Yes I have. Composers. These are people who have got the same role as\nwriters, painters, sculptors. These people are shaping our time. They are a\nmirror of our age and the age in which they lived. <\/p>\n\n\n\n NY Glam: What is your advice for aspiring\nmusicians? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Be honest with music and the composer\u2019s work!
