They are wounds. Doors. Throats.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"230\" data-end=\"277\">And when they open, the Earth speaks in fire.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"279\" data-end=\"438\">A volcanic eruption is one of the most dramatic ways our planet shows that it is alive\u2014from rivers of glowing lava to ash-filled skies that can darken the sun.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"440\" data-end=\"478\">What is a volcanic eruption, really?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"652\">Deep below the surface, parts of the Earth\u2019s mantle are so hot that rock doesn\u2019t stay solid. It melts into magma\u2014a thick, glowing mixture of molten rock, crystals, and gas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"654\" data-end=\"775\">This magma:<br data-start=\"665\" data-end=\"668\" \/>\u2013 Collects in underground chambers<br data-start=\"702\" data-end=\"705\" \/>\u2013 Builds pressure over time<br data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"735\" \/>\u2013 Searches for weaknesses in the crust<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"948\">When the pressure becomes too great, the magma forces its way upward through cracks and vents. The moment it reaches the surface, it becomes lava, and the eruption begins.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"950\" data-end=\"1146\">A volcanic eruption is, at its core, this:<br data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"995\" \/>Magma, ash, and gases exploding or flowing out of the Earth, released through a volcano that acts like a vent between the underground and the open sky.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1181\">Not all eruptions look the same<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1183\" data-end=\"1340\">We often imagine a classic cone-shaped volcano spitting lava, but eruptions come in many styles, some slow and almost gentle, others sudden and catastrophic.<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1342\" data-end=\"2713\">\n<li data-start=\"1342\" data-end=\"1655\">\n<p data-start=\"1345\" data-end=\"1655\">Effusive eruptions \u2013 the rivers of fire<br data-start=\"1384\" data-end=\"1387\" \/>\u2013 Lava oozes or pours out of vents, flowing down the slopes like a bright, slow-moving river.<br data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1486\" \/>\u2013 Basaltic lava, like that seen in Hawaii, can travel long distances.<br data-start=\"1558\" data-end=\"1561\" \/>\u2013 These eruptions can destroy homes and roads, but they often give people time to evacuate.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1988\">\n<p data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"1988\">Explosive eruptions \u2013 the sky turned to stone<br data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"1708\" \/>\u2013 Thick, gas-rich magma gets clogged near the surface. Pressure rises until it bursts violently.<br data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1810\" \/>\u2013 Ash, rock, and gas shoot into the sky in towering columns.<br data-start=\"1873\" data-end=\"1876\" \/>\u2013 These eruptions can blow apart the top of the volcano itself and send deadly clouds racing down the slopes.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2359\">\n<p data-start=\"1993\" data-end=\"2359\">Pyroclastic flows \u2013 the ground-level avalanche of death<br data-start=\"2048\" data-end=\"2051\" \/>\u2013 These are fast, searing-hot currents of ash, gas, and fragments of rock that race down the volcano at speeds over 100 km\/h (or more).<br data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2192\" \/>\u2013 They are impossible to outrun and can obliterate everything in their path.<br data-start=\"2271\" data-end=\"2274\" \/>\u2013 Many of history\u2019s deadliest volcanic disasters were caused by pyroclastic flows.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2713\">\n<p data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2713\">Hidden killers \u2013 gases and mudflows<br data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2402\" \/>\u2013 Volcanoes release gases like sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and others. In high concentrations, they can suffocate people and animals or create toxic air.<br data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2565\" \/>\u2013 Ash mixed with rain can create lahars\u2014volcanic mudflows that surge down valleys, burying towns, fields, and roads in heavy, cement-like sludge.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2715\" data-end=\"2745\">The ash that reaches the sky<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2747\" data-end=\"2899\">Volcanic ash is not soft powder. It\u2019s made of tiny, sharp particles of glass and rock. When a large eruption sends ash high into the atmosphere, it can:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2901\" data-end=\"3162\">\u2013 Collapse roofs under its weight<br data-start=\"2934\" data-end=\"2937\" \/>\u2013 Damage airplane engines (jets flying through ash clouds can lose power)<br data-start=\"3010\" data-end=\"3013\" \/>\u2013 Irritate eyes and lungs, especially in children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems<br data-start=\"3113\" data-end=\"3116\" \/>\u2013 Cover crops and contaminate water supplies<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3164\" data-end=\"3358\">If the ash reaches high enough into the stratosphere, it can spread around the globe.<br data-start=\"3249\" data-end=\"3252\" \/>There, it can reflect sunlight back into space, cooling the Earth slightly for months or even a few years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3360\" data-end=\"3395\">When volcanoes change the climate<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3397\" data-end=\"3543\">Most eruptions affect only local regions. But the largest ones\u2014the truly powerful events\u2014can have a measurable effect on the planet\u2019s temperature.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3545\" data-end=\"3682\">Such eruptions release vast amounts of ash and sulfur dioxide into the upper atmosphere.<br data-start=\"3633\" data-end=\"3636\" \/>The tiny particles and droplets that form can:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3684\" data-end=\"3782\">\u2013 Block part of the sunlight<br data-start=\"3712\" data-end=\"3715\" \/>\u2013 Slightly lower global temperatures<br data-start=\"3751\" data-end=\"3754\" \/>\u2013 Disturb weather patterns<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3992\">History holds quiet reminders in old records:<br data-start=\"3829\" data-end=\"3832\" \/>\u2013 \u201cThe year without a summer,\u201d when crops failed and frost came at strange times<br data-start=\"3912\" data-end=\"3915\" \/>\u2013 Strange colors in sunsets<br data-start=\"3942\" data-end=\"3945\" \/>\u2013 Unusual cold spells following big eruptions<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3994\" data-end=\"4095\">Volcanoes can\u2019t rewrite climate forever on their own, but they can give the planet a temporary chill.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4097\" data-end=\"4125\">Why volcanoes exist at all<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4127\" data-end=\"4192\">Volcanoes are not random. They tend to appear in specific places:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4194\" data-end=\"4351\">\u2013 Along tectonic plate boundaries, where plates collide or pull apart<br data-start=\"4263\" data-end=\"4266\" \/>\u2013 Over \u201chot spots,\u201d places where extra-hot mantle material rises toward the surface<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4353\" data-end=\"4400\">They are part of Earth\u2019s deep recycling system:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4402\" data-end=\"4602\">\u2013 Old crust sinks back into the mantle at subduction zones<br data-start=\"4460\" data-end=\"4463\" \/>\u2013 New crust is created at mid-ocean ridges and volcanic arcs<br data-start=\"4523\" data-end=\"4526\" \/>\u2013 Gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide are released to the atmosphere<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4604\" data-end=\"4759\">Without volcanism, the Earth\u2019s surface and atmosphere would be very different. Volcanoes helped build the continents and contributed to the air we breathe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4761\" data-end=\"4791\">Living in the shadow of fire<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4793\" data-end=\"4875\">For millions of people, volcanoes are not distant curiosities. They are neighbors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4877\" data-end=\"5064\">Volcanic regions often have:<br data-start=\"4905\" data-end=\"4908\" \/>\u2013 Fertile soils, rich in minerals, perfect for agriculture<br data-start=\"4966\" data-end=\"4969\" \/>\u2013 Geothermal energy for heating and electricity<br data-start=\"5016\" data-end=\"5019\" \/>\u2013 Beautiful landscapes that attract tourism<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5066\" data-end=\"5169\">People live, farm, and raise families in these places, accepting the risks for the benefits they bring.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5171\" data-end=\"5244\">Because of this, monitoring volcanoes becomes a matter of life and death.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5246\" data-end=\"5271\">How we watch the giants<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5273\" data-end=\"5362\">Volcanologists and monitoring agencies use many tools to keep an eye on active volcanoes:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5364\" data-end=\"5628\">\u2013 Seismometers to detect small earthquakes caused by moving magma<br data-start=\"5429\" data-end=\"5432\" \/>\u2013 GPS and satellite measurements to see if the ground is swelling or deforming<br data-start=\"5510\" data-end=\"5513\" \/>\u2013 Gas sensors to measure changing levels of volcanic gases<br data-start=\"5571\" data-end=\"5574\" \/>\u2013 Cameras and drones to observe vents and lava domes<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5630\" data-end=\"5790\">Often, a restless volcano will give warnings:<br data-start=\"5675\" data-end=\"5678\" \/>\u2013 Increased seismic activity<br data-start=\"5706\" data-end=\"5709\" \/>\u2013 Changes in gas emissions<br data-start=\"5735\" data-end=\"5738\" \/>\u2013 Ground inflation<br data-start=\"5756\" data-end=\"5759\" \/>\u2013 New cracks or small eruptions<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5792\" data-end=\"5999\">But not every volcano behaves the same, and prediction is never perfect.<br data-start=\"5864\" data-end=\"5867\" \/>Scientists can often say, \u201cThe risk is increasing\u201d or \u201cAn eruption is likely soon,\u201d but they can rarely give an exact date and size.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6001\" data-end=\"6040\">The human cost\u2014and the human response<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6042\" data-end=\"6065\">Volcanic eruptions can:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6067\" data-end=\"6231\">\u2013 Bury towns in ash<br data-start=\"6086\" data-end=\"6089\" \/>\u2013 Cut off roads and airports<br data-start=\"6117\" data-end=\"6120\" \/>\u2013 Displace entire communities<br data-start=\"6149\" data-end=\"6152\" \/>\u2013 Take lives in minutes when pyroclastic flows or lahars strike without warning<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6233\" data-end=\"6285\">Yet after the disaster, you also see something else:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6287\" data-end=\"6502\">\u2013 Villages rebuilding, sometimes on the same slopes<br data-start=\"6338\" data-end=\"6341\" \/>\u2013 People returning to their land, attached to their homes and fields despite the danger<br data-start=\"6428\" data-end=\"6431\" \/>\u2013 New forests growing on old lava, life reclaiming black, barren rock<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6504\" data-end=\"6636\">Volcanoes destroy, but they also create.
