The sky folds into itself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"218\" data-end=\"421\">From far above, satellites see it first: a spiraling monster with a clear, eerie \u201ceye\u201d at its center.<br data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"322\" \/>On the ground, people feel the pressure drop, the winds rise, and the sea slowly climb the shore.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"644\">We call it different names\u2014hurricane, cyclone, typhoon\u2014but it is the same terrifying force of nature: a giant rotating storm born over warm water, powered by heat, capable of rewriting entire coastlines in a single night.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"646\" data-end=\"669\">One storm, many names<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"671\" data-end=\"774\">The storm itself doesn\u2019t care what we call it.<br data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"720\" \/>But humans do, and the name depends on where it forms:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"933\">\u2013 Hurricane: over the Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Pacific<br data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"839\" \/>\u2013 Typhoon: over the western Pacific<br data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"877\" \/>\u2013 Cyclone: over the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"935\" data-end=\"1086\">They are all the same type of storm: a powerful tropical cyclone, with a swirling structure, fierce winds, and heavy rain wrapped around a central eye.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1111\">How a monster is born<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1276\">It doesn\u2019t start as a monster. It starts as a disturbance\u2014clusters of thunderstorms drifting over warm ocean water. But the ocean is holding a secret weapon: heat.<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"2020\">\n<li data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1470\">\n<p data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1470\">Warm water as fuel<br data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1302\" \/>Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons feed on warm oceans, usually at least 26\u201327\u00b0C (around 80\u00b0F) at the surface. Warm water evaporates, sending moist, warm air upward.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1805\">\n<p data-start=\"1475\" data-end=\"1805\">Rising air and falling pressure<br data-start=\"1506\" data-end=\"1509\" \/>As warm air rises, it cools and condenses into clouds and rain, releasing more heat into the atmosphere.<br data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1619\" \/>That heat makes the air rise even more, lowering the pressure below.<br data-start=\"1690\" data-end=\"1693\" \/>Lower pressure pulls in more air at the surface, which also becomes warm and moist\u2014and the cycle intensifies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"2020\">\n<p data-start=\"1810\" data-end=\"2020\">The spin of the Earth<br data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1834\" \/>The rotation of the Earth twists the incoming air, giving the storm its spin.<br data-start=\"1914\" data-end=\"1917\" \/>In the Northern Hemisphere, storms rotate counterclockwise; in the Southern Hemisphere, clockwise.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2174\">Over time, if the conditions stay just right\u2014warm water, moist air, low wind shear\u2014the storm organizes into a massive, spinning engine of heat and wind.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2176\" data-end=\"2209\">The anatomy of a tropical giant<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2355\">From the outside, a mature hurricane or typhoon can stretch hundreds of kilometers across. Inside, it has a structure both beautiful and deadly:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2357\" data-end=\"2539\">\u2013 The eye:<br data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2370\" \/>A strange, often calm center, sometimes with blue sky visible. Winds are light here, and the air is sinking. Do not be fooled; it is a quiet heart surrounded by chaos.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2541\" data-end=\"2806\">\u2013 The eyewall:<br data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2558\" \/>This is the ring of towering thunderstorms wrapped tightly around the eye. Here, the strongest winds and heaviest rains roar. When the eyewall passes over, buildings are tested, trees are ripped out, and anything not anchored can become airborne.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2808\" data-end=\"2962\">\u2013 Rainbands:<br data-start=\"2820\" data-end=\"2823\" \/>Long, curved bands of clouds and thunderstorms spinning out from the center. When they move slowly or stall, they can dump days of relentless rain over one region.<br data-start=\"3885\" data-end=\"3888\" \/>Rivers swell, dams strain, and neighborhoods far from the coast find themselves underwater.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"3984\" data-end=\"4089\">You can survive the wind and the surge, only to be trapped by rising water days after the eye has passed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4091\" data-end=\"4139\">The human footprint: storms in a warming world<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4141\" data-end=\"4344\">Tropical cyclones are natural events and have been shaping coasts and ecosystems for millions of years. Mangrove forests, barrier islands, and coral reefs all evolved in a world where these storms exist.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4346\" data-end=\"4410\">But today, human activity is changing the background conditions:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4412\" data-end=\"4646\">\u2013 Warmer oceans mean more energy available for storms.<br data-start=\"4466\" data-end=\"4469\" \/>\u2013 Higher sea levels make storm surges more dangerous, reaching farther inland.<br data-start=\"4547\" data-end=\"4550\" \/>\u2013 Rapid coastal development puts more people and buildings directly in the path of these storms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4648\" data-end=\"4804\">Scientists are still studying how exactly climate change affects the frequency and intensity of hurricanes and typhoons, but there is growing evidence that:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4806\" data-end=\"4960\">\u2013 The strongest storms may be getting stronger.<br data-start=\"4853\" data-end=\"4856\" \/>\u2013 Heavy rainfall during storms is increasing.<br data-start=\"4901\" data-end=\"4904\" \/>\u2013 Slow-moving, rain-heavy storms may become more common.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4962\" data-end=\"5053\">We are, in many ways, placing more fragile structures directly in front of stronger storms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5055\" data-end=\"5107\">Can we calm the storm?
