But racing through that darkness are countless rocks and icy bodies\u2014asteroids and comets\u2014left over from the birth of our solar system. Most of them never come close to us. Some burn up as harmless shooting stars.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"323\" data-end=\"377\">But every once in a very long while, a big one hits.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"379\" data-end=\"553\">A large asteroid or comet impact is one of the most dramatic natural disasters our planet can experience\u2014a force of nature that comes not from Earth, but from the sky itself.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"555\" data-end=\"594\">What exactly is an asteroid or comet?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"596\" data-end=\"692\">Asteroids and comets are both \u201cspace rocks,\u201d but they\u2019re a bit different in nature and behavior.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"893\">\u2022 Asteroids<br data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"708\" \/>\u2013 Made mostly of rock and metal<br data-start=\"739\" data-end=\"742\" \/>\u2013 Mostly live in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter<br data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"804\" \/>\u2013 Some, called near-Earth objects (NEOs), cross Earth\u2019s orbit and occasionally come close<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"895\" data-end=\"1092\">\u2022 Comets<br data-start=\"903\" data-end=\"906\" \/>\u2013 Made of ice, dust, and rock<br data-start=\"935\" data-end=\"938\" \/>\u2013 Come from much farther away, in the colder regions of the solar system<br data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1013\" \/>\u2013 When they approach the Sun, their ice turns to gas and creates a glowing tail<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1219\">Most are tiny on a planetary scale. But a small percentage are big enough to cause serious damage if they collide with Earth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1221\" data-end=\"1269\">When a giant rock hits: what actually happens?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1271\" data-end=\"1534\">Imagine a mountain-sized rock traveling tens of thousands of kilometers per hour. When it hits Earth, the energy released is equivalent to millions or billions of nuclear bombs. The exact effects depend on its size, speed, angle, and where it lands\u2014land or ocean.<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"2914\">\n<li data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1807\">\n<p data-start=\"1539\" data-end=\"1807\">Shockwave and fireball<br data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1564\" \/>\u2013 The impact releases an enormous blast of heat and pressure.<br data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1631\" \/>\u2013 Near the impact site, everything can be instantly vaporized or set on fire.<br data-start=\"1711\" data-end=\"1714\" \/>\u2013 A powerful shockwave travels outward, flattening forests, cities, and anything standing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"2020\">\n<p data-start=\"1812\" data-end=\"2020\">Global fires<br data-start=\"1824\" data-end=\"1827\" \/>\u2013 The heat of the impact and red-hot debris raining down from the sky can ignite massive wildfires over large areas.<br data-start=\"1946\" data-end=\"1949\" \/>\u2013 Smoke from these fires adds to the dust and ash in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2022\" data-end=\"2359\">\n<p data-start=\"2025\" data-end=\"2359\">Tsunamis (if it hits the ocean)<br data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2059\" \/>\u2013 Since most of Earth is covered by water, there\u2019s a high chance a large asteroid would land in the sea.<br data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2169\" \/>\u2013 The impact could push out gigantic waves\u2014megatunami-scale in extreme cases.<br data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2252\" \/>\u2013 These waves could travel across entire ocean basins, flooding coastlines thousands of kilometers away.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2361\" data-end=\"2914\">\n<p data-start=\"2364\" data-end=\"2494\">Dust clouds and \u201cimpact winter\u201d<br data-start=\"2395\" data-end=\"2398\" \/>One of the most dangerous long-term effects is not the initial blast, but what happens after.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2499\" data-end=\"2824\">\u2013 The impact ejects dust, rock, and vapor high into the atmosphere.<br data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2569\" \/>\u2013 Tiny particles can spread around the globe and block part of the sunlight.<br data-start=\"2648\" data-end=\"2651\" \/>\u2013 If the impact is big enough, this can lead to an \u201cimpact winter\u201d:<br data-start=\"2721\" data-end=\"2724\" \/>\u00b7 Cooler global temperatures<br data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2760\" \/>\u00b7 Darker skies<br data-start=\"2779\" data-end=\"2782\" \/>\u00b7 Shorter growing seasons for crops<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2829\" data-end=\"2914\">Plants struggle, food chains are disrupted, and ecosystems come under serious stress.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2916\" data-end=\"2969\">A disaster written in stone: the dinosaurs\u2019 warning<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2971\" data-end=\"3054\">We don\u2019t have to imagine all of this only with theory\u2014Earth has a famous example:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3056\" data-end=\"3317\">About 66 million years ago, a large asteroid, roughly 10\u201312 km wide, struck near what is now the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula in Mexico. It created the Chicxulub crater and is strongly linked to the mass extinction that wiped out most dinosaurs (and many other species).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3319\" data-end=\"3523\">That impact:<br data-start=\"3331\" data-end=\"3334\" \/>\u2013 Released unimaginable energy<br data-start=\"3364\" data-end=\"3367\" \/>\u2013 Triggered fires, tsunamis, and a long period of cooling<br data-start=\"3424\" data-end=\"3427\" \/>\u2013 Transformed Earth\u2019s ecosystems and opened the door for mammals\u2014and eventually humans\u2014to thrive<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3525\" data-end=\"3615\">So yes, a large asteroid or comet impact can literally rewrite the story of life on Earth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3651\">How often do big impacts happen?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3653\" data-end=\"3720\">Here\u2019s the reassuring part: truly large impacts are extremely rare.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3722\" data-end=\"4195\">\u2013 Tiny meteoroids hit the atmosphere every day and burn up as shooting stars.<br data-start=\"3799\" data-end=\"3802\" \/>\u2013 Larger objects (a few meters across) sometimes explode high in the air, causing bright fireballs and sonic booms, but usually don\u2019t reach the ground.<br data-start=\"3953\" data-end=\"3956\" \/>\u2013 City-destroying or region-destroying impacts (tens to hundreds of meters wide) happen on timescales of thousands to tens of thousands of years.<br data-start=\"4101\" data-end=\"4104\" \/>\u2013 Global-scale impacts like the dinosaur-killer are on the scale of many millions of years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4197\" data-end=\"4307\">In other words: such an event <em data-start=\"4227\" data-end=\"4232\">can<\/em> happen again one day, but it is very unlikely in any given human lifetime.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4309\" data-end=\"4334\">Who\u2019s watching the sky?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4336\" data-end=\"4510\">Unlike earthquakes or supervolcanoes, asteroid and comet impacts come with a unique advantage: we can actually see many of the potential threats long before they get near us.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4512\" data-end=\"4757\">Space agencies and observatories around the world are constantly scanning the skies for near-Earth objects (NEOs). They:<br data-start=\"4632\" data-end=\"4635\" \/>\u2013 Track their orbits<br data-start=\"4655\" data-end=\"4658\" \/>\u2013 Calculate how close they will come to Earth<br data-start=\"4703\" data-end=\"4706\" \/>\u2013 Estimate their size and potential impact energy<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4759\" data-end=\"4902\">If an object is discovered that might one day cross Earth\u2019s orbit at the wrong time, scientists can refine its trajectory and predict the risk.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4904\" data-end=\"4952\">From watching to deflecting: planetary defense<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4954\" data-end=\"5142\">The next step after tracking is\u2026 defense. If we find a dangerous object early enough\u2014years or decades before impact\u2014there are possible ways to gently change its orbit so it misses Earth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5144\" data-end=\"5361\">Ideas include:<br data-start=\"5158\" data-end=\"5161\" \/>\u2013 Hitting it with a spacecraft to nudge it slightly (a \u201ckinetic impactor\u201d)<br data-start=\"5235\" data-end=\"5238\" \/>\u2013 Using a spacecraft\u2019s gravity as a \u201ctug\u201d over long periods<br data-start=\"5297\" data-end=\"5300\" \/>\u2013 In the far future, more advanced methods might be developed<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5363\" data-end=\"5502\">The key is time. A tiny change in the orbit, if done early, can become a huge difference by the time the asteroid would have reached Earth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5504\" data-end=\"5533\">Living under the cosmic sky<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5535\" data-end=\"5758\">It can feel unsettling to think that giant rocks sometimes wander across our orbit. But it\u2019s also part of the natural environment of our planet, just like earthquakes, storms, and volcanoes\u2014except this one comes from space.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5760\" data-end=\"6027\">The difference today is:<br data-start=\"5784\" data-end=\"5787\" \/>\u2013 We have telescopes, satellites, and computers that can see and track many of these objects.<br data-start=\"5880\" data-end=\"5883\" \/>\u2013 We have growing international cooperation focused on planetary defense.<br data-start=\"5956\" data-end=\"5959\" \/>\u2013 We are no longer completely blind to what is happening in the sky.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6029\" data-end=\"6147\">Should we panic? No.<br data-start=\"6049\" data-end=\"6052\" \/>Should we respect the possibility and support the science that watches the heavens?
